Peru Workshop
Vice-Minister of Mines of Peru, Mr Guillermo Shinno and Australian Ambassador to Peru and Bolivia Mr John Woods
ACSMP Centre Director, David Laurence was asked by the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism (DRET) to facilitate capacity building workshops in Central and South America. These workshops entitled, Leading Practice Sustainable Development in Mining: Life of Mine Capacity Building Workshops, were held in Lima, Peru and Mexico City, Mexico for senior government officials and industry leaders.

The workshops focused on environmental management and sustainability, water, community engagement and the session topics were well received by all participants. Government officials from neighbouring countries were invited to attend with delegates from Bolivia, Columbia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Uruguay and Panama presenting on mining issues affecting their countries.

The workshops aimed to foster sustainable mining practices by providing technical and capacity building support to government officials while improving local government capacity to integrate environmental, economic and social issues through all phases of mining production.

The Australian Ambassador to Mexico, Katrina Cooper, commented, “The Mexican and Australian governments have decided to join together to host this workshop which will focus on the implementation of sustainable development principles and practices over the life cycle of a mine, from exploration through to operation, closure and rehabilitation. Australia has a great deal of expertise to offer in the area of mining sustainability. It is home to some of the most efficient and advanced mining operations, services, technology, infrastructure and transport supply chains in the world. “

The workshops were focused on the DRET Leading Practice Handbooks, with ACSMP being the lead author of A Guide to Leading Practice Sustainable Development in Mining: http://www.ret.gov.au/resources/Documents/LPSDP/guideLPSD.pdf
