Research interest

 

I assess the environmental impact of mining using remote sensing tools.

I use ground based, airborne and satellite based remote sensors to visualise, identify and monitor the environmental footprints of mining activities.

I analyse spectral characteristics of vegetation, water and soil to identify possible contaminations from the surrounding mining activities.

I always enjoyed empirical science

What are your research goals?

My goal is to develop modelling tools based on remote sensing and GIS to identify and predict impacts of mining activities.

What do people not understand about you do?

A wealth of diagnostic information that could be generated through energy interactions of light is hard to imagine by a person who is not involved in the optical remote sensing.  

Advice for prospective mining engineers

Minimising environmental footprint and the consent from community are the two most important licences for a mine site to operate.

Secured research funding of over $88,000 in 2012-2013 for following projects:

  • Investigating capabilities of an advanced Interferometry in detecting horizontal displacement at the Metropolitan Mine (2012)
  • Investigating the capabilities of hyperspectral remote sensing in detecting fugitive metals around the Yerranderie Silver Mine in the Blue Mountains National Park (2013)
  • Development of satellite imagery based most suitable vegetation index to monitor mine site rehabilitation (2013)
  • Assessing the effectiveness of biodiversity offsetting efforts to balance conservation and mining industry impacts (2013)

Education

PhD/postgraduate

PhD (Mining Engineering) from UNSW for the thesis titled ‘Investigation of mine environmental monitoring with satellite based sensors’.

The PhD study was focused on evaluating satellite-based images for their potential applications in the surveillance of mining environments, including the condition of leachates, vegetation, air, water and land usage. This study points to the potential significance, and applications, of satellite based optical remote sensing technology at mine sites, both - underground and open cut as well as metal and coal.
